PASSAge - Personalized mobility, Assistance and Service Systems in an Aging society

PASSAge is a BMBF-funded R&D-project in the field of Ambient Assited Living (AAL) with a total cost volume of 3.9 Million €. Besides the Chair for Building Realization and Robotics, 9 other research and industry partners form the consortium: SOPHIA mit P.S. Südbayern GmbH , City Sax GmbH , Sunrise Medical GmbH, Haag-Rehatechnik GmbH & Co. KG , metaio GmbH, Heidelberg Medical Marketing GmbH, Humanwissenschafliches Zentrum (LMU), Chair for Media Technology (TUM), Chair for Sports Medicine (TUM). The project's duration is 3 years (June 2012 – June 2015). The three TUM Chairs build the scientific back-bone of the consortium. The Chair for Building Realization and Robotics was the Initiator of the research project and assembled the consortium. Besides its technological R&D activity in the project, the Chair also holds the position of the project coordinator.

The project PASSAge addresses the mobility issues within an ageing society by developing a modular and personalized mobility system that can be integrated into the individual surrounding of the user, enhancing the quality of everyday living by encouraging individual mobility, as well as supporting safety, comfort and health. Adaptable, customizable and user-friendly add-on modules (operation and shopping assistance, health phones, transfer support at the entrance of buildings or within buildings) are being adapted from existing technologies and innovative mobility components of the field of personal mobility devices (e-bike, e-rollers, e-car, trolleys), which are already equipped with technologies (ICT, micro-systems), will be later on integrated. In this way, a cross-departmental assistance system that can be used flexibly with the help of an intelligent logistic for provision is formed. These add-on modules enable a user-friendly adaption of the mobility components to the user groups and the integration of compatible, widespread range of services.

A major issue within PASSAge, in the domestic as well as in the urban context, is the integration of innovative and technologically equipped mobility devices. Thus, the Chair besides the development of robotic assisted assistance and transfer support devices for vehicles itself, is especially interested in their interconnection with buildings as important endpoints of the mobility chain. While the Chair for Building Realization and Robotics in this project is rather concerned with the physical assistance (mechanics, mechatronics, process design, architecture & design, construction, modules for the adaption), the Chair for Media Technology (also TUM) addresses more the information-technological aspects in its individual dimensions of the project. The third TUM-Chair, the Chair for Sports Medicine, coordinates the 3 real world field test phases and the test subjects throughout the project from medical point of view.
